Chapman, M, Larumbe-Zabala, E, Triplett, NT, and Naclerio, F. Velocity change estimation by subjective measures over a wide-load spectrum in squat bench press. J Strength Cond Res 35(2S): S51–S56, 2021—This study compared whether the perception of effort measured on repetition-by-repetition basis during continuous sets to failure is different between (SQ) press (BP). After determining one repetition maximum (1RM) value both SQ BP, 18 subjects (28.2 ± 5 years, 50% women) performed 7 per exercise, separated 24–48 hours, alternating using following relative load ranges: 30 < 40%, 40 50%, 50 60%, 60% 70%, 70 80%, 80 90%, >90%. The mean accelerative velocity (MAV) rating perceived exertion (RPE) OMNI-RES (0–10) scale were for every each set. ability identify changes volitional distinguish loading zones divided into 10% slots, from 100% 1RM was confirmed BP. RPE values at (a) first repetition; (b) where MAV peaks; (c) drops ≤10% (d) last repetition, showed no differences (p > 0.05, d 0.2) exercises. In conclusion, same scores can be applied exercises, either estimating or monitoring failure.

Low-Load Bench Press Training to Fatigue Results in Muscle Hypertrophy Similar to High-Load Bench Press Training

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the training responses observed with low-load resistance exercise to volitional fatigue translates into significant muscle hypertrophy, and compare that response to high-load resistance training. Nine previously untrained men (aged 25 [SD 3] years at the beginning of the study, standing height 1.73 [SD 0.07] m, body mass 68.9 [SD 8.1] kg) compl...

The health and performance benefits of the squat, deadlift and bench press

The squat is a well‒known exercise to strengthen the muscles of the lower limb. Conditioning specialists universally agree the squat is among the top three prescribed exercises for sports training, rehabilitation and prehabilitation.1 Previously, there has been much debate about the safety of deep (full range) squats. Strength and conditioning coaches often define a deep squat by amount knee ra...

Relationship between throwing velocity, muscle power, and bar velocity during bench press in elite handball players.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between ball-throwing velocity during a 3-step running throw and dynamic strength, power, and bar velocity during a concentric-only bench-press exercise in team-handball players. METHODS Fourteen elite senior male team-handball players volunteered to participate. Each volunteer had power and bar velocity measured during a conce...

Relative Load Prediction by Velocity and the OMNI-RES 0-10 Scale in Parallel Squat.

This study analyzed the possibility of using movement velocity and the rate of perceived exertion as predictors of relative load in the parallel squat (PSQ) exercise. To determine the full load-velocity and load-rate of perceived exertion relationships, 290 young, resistance-trained athletes (209 males and 81 females) performed a progressive strength test up to the 1 repetition maximum. Longitu...

The effect of sodium bicarbonate ingestion on back squat and bench press exercise to failure.

This study examined the acute effects of NaHCO3 ingestion on repetitions to failure and rating of perceived exertion in the back squat and bench press in trained men. Eight resistance-trained men took part in this double-blind, randomized crossover experimental study whereby they ingested NaHCO3 (0.3 g·kg(-1) body mass) or placebo (sodium chloride NaCl: 0.045 g·kg(-1) body mass) solution 60 min...
